Florida’s 24-14 win gave a factual basis to the perception that the Big 12 wasn’t ready to leapfrog the SEC. Ole Miss’ 47-34 win over Texas Tech in the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic also didn’t help the Big 12’s case. That said, Texas coach Mack Brown believes the Big 12 has never been more competitive. ”The difference is that the entire league is better,” Brown said. “Everybody talks about the SEC. You can actually lose to anybody in this league. That wasn’t the case 12 years or probably not even four years ago.” (Dallas Morning News | Chuck Carlton) H/T: @AdamCaparell

Irving suffered a broken leg and collapsed lung and was taken to Wake Med Trauma Center, according to a statement released by the school. He was scheduled for surgery Sunday night. Irving was cited with careless and reckless driving, according to a state highway patrol report, after a one-vehicle crash at 4:40a.m. near the 314-mile marker on Interstate40. There is no indication in the police report that alcohol was involved, but the report indicated that being tired or sleepy might have contributed to the crash, which occurred in western Johnston County. Can you talk about the prospects of a game between Notre Dame and Texas in 2013 — and we’re assuming that would be at one of the two campuses? I’m not really in a position to talk about the prospects of that game in any particular year. What I can say is that we would love to play Texas. We love playing the schools that have had a comparable history. But also that share our values.I think Texas is one of the great athletic programs in the country. Not just now, but for many years. I’m a huge fan of the program, their coaches, and (athletic director) DeLoss (Dodds) is one of the giants of our industry. So, if we can figure out how to play Texas at some point, we would love to do it. (mySA sports | Jerry Briggs)

A few days after missing out on one of the biggest-name quarterbacks in the state, the Washington Huskies rebounded by getting a commitment from the son of one of the biggest name quarterbacks in football history. Nick Montana of Oaks Christian High in Westlake Village, Calif., and the son of Hall of Famer Joe Montana, said Tuesday night he has given a commitment to UW and will sign with the Huskies next February. They met, they talked, and they didn’t change a thing. The Pac-10 won’t drop its round-robin football schedule in favor of an eight-game lineup that allows for an extra non-conference game — and presumably an extra win. Put another way: The league will continue to operate at a competitive disadvantage relative to other BCS conferences. Sounds about right. Ron Zook’s Illini will open the next two football seasons against Missouri in St. Louis.” After that, there will be a hiatus,” UI athletic director Ron Guenther said. The series, like the basketball Border War, is good for the cash register. But it has been a disaster on the scoreboard (4-0 favoring Mizzou) and a hindrance to the desire to schedule seven UI home games.” Both Missouri and Illinois have agreed to call off the St. Louis series,” Guenther said. “Eventually, we might resume it on a home-and-home basis, or perhaps return to St. Louis, but we have been leaning toward games on campus at some point in the future. Dwyer is well on his way at 1419 yards in his sophomore season. A net increase of 900 yards from Dwyer’s pre-Heisman year to actual Heisman year seems insurmountable. Reaching the average Heisman rushing yardage in the Modern Era* would require Dwyer increase his rushing total by 637 yards, which appears to be another daunting task… (The Legacyx4 Part 1 | Part 2)
