Go Hokies!

Archive for the sean glennon Category

The thing that irritates me the most about Sean Glennon is his self absorbed, I am better than you think, me first attitude.  WSLS in Roanke is reporting that Glennon is unhappy with his playing time and pretty much just bitches about how the quarterback situation is unfair.

“(Saturday), the second half was the first time a red flag went off in my mind,” said Glennon, who started Saturday’s game but was in for only 22 plays, 17 fewer than Taylor.

“Like I said before this game, I was told it was going to work like last year (when we split snaps), so I had no reason to believe something like that was going to happen. Now that it did, I’m a little concerned.”

Glennon’s numbers this year remind me of one of my calculus formulas we needed to memorize: (17/31) * (181 YRDS + 1TD - 3INTS) = SHIT.  The only thing he should be saying is, “I’de like to thank my coaches for my pitty play time.”

Here is a gem last week from Kyle Tucker’s excellent blog.

Most of Hokie Nation is not booing me. And maybe for that small group that is, maybe they’re jealous they’re not out there.

I for one am definitely jealous of Glennon and every night wish that I could be the one ruining Hokie football.

This is the first me first team second Glennon rant in the Washington Post after the loss to LSU in 2007.

“I hope the coaches realize I need to be on the field this year,” Glennon said. “If they don’t, I think a lot of programs would be willing to take me. I don’t want to think about transferring right now. That’s not a good thought. I don’t want to leave here. But I feel like I’m good enough to play on any team in this country. I feel like, not to say I’d make it, but that I have a shot at the next level. I’m not going to not do everything I can to get there.”

If Glennon wasn’t on the field last year we would have beat Boston College at home and been playing for the National Championship.  Grant Noel was bad, but at least he did what was better for the team and stepped aside for Bryan Randall.

This edition of the BlogPoll Roundtable is being hosted by Braves & Birds.  By day he is an ordinary Michigan Alumn, but by night he is covering all of Atlanta sports including Bulldog football.  Now onto these excellent questions.

1. How would you rate your program’s service to you in the first two weeks of the season?

Aside from the occasional glimpse of hope from Tyrod Taylor I would have to rate it somewhere in between waterboarding and having to watch the Director’s Cut of Kazaam.  I mean losing to ECU wasn’t the end of the world.  It was a game we should have won, but they are a legitimate top 15 team.  However, struggling offensively against Furman with our stupid as shit two QB system was agonizing.  For instance, Tyrod drives the Hokies all the way down the field.  Yet on 3rd and goal from the 5 they decide to take him out and put in Glennon the guy with the mobility of a redwood tree.  Hello, if shit breaks down he no longer can run it in. Needless to say we got a fieldgoal.  Please let those be the last snaps Sean Glennon ever takes at Tech.

2. How happy are you with your program’s overall scheme? We are in a period in which the spread has become a total obsession in the media. If you’re a fan of a spread team, are you happy with the way your program has implemented it? If you’re a fan of a non-spread team, do you wish that your program would convert to this Xenu of offenses?

I hate our offensive scheme and coordinator Bryan Stinespring (as do most Hokies).  This is a quote from his bio page.

We want, and expect, to attack both the defense and the field of play in a concerted, aggressive approach. We want to be able to use schemes and formations that utilize our talents while placing pressure on the opponent to adjust and defend. Our goal is to set the tempo of the game and dictate the style of play that is indicative of Virginia Tech football.

In two games we have 572 yards of total offense and 5 touchdowns. Obviously we aren’t meeting one or more of these offensive goals.  I really think Virginia Tech could benefit from a new coordinator familiar with running the spread.  We always have a 5 star mobile quarterback and tons of offensive speed, but maybe not the best offensive line.  Getting these skill players into space would make our offense explosive.  There are teams with half our talent yet double the points scored because they run a spread.

3. Rate your stadium’s cleanliness and menu options.

Stadium cleanliness is one aspect of Virginia Tech football I have yet to scrutinize.  Simply put if I had to use the bathroom I wouldn’t have to disinfect myself afterwords.  No complaints of the food either.  We have those giant turkey legs and shaved ice which go great with your favorite smuggled liquor.

4. As an incentive to provide your valued feedback, you will be entered into a drawing for exciting prizes! What one prize would you like for your program?

I’ve beat this horse to death, but a new offensive coordinator.

5. Since we’re all about choices, take one of the following two options for entertainment’s sake:
a. What’s your most memorable experience involving a comment card?
b. If your program were a casual dining chain, which one would it be?

(a) On those evaluation forms you fill out for your professor at the end of the semester I wrote, “Is piss poor one word or two?”

The news to pull off Tyrod Taylor’s redshirt came today during Coach Beamer’s weekly press conference

“We plan to play both Sean Glennon and Tyrod Taylor this weekend,” Beamer said during the press conference.

“The No. 1 need for us is to be a good running football team. For several different reasons that needs to be our strength and I think by putting a guy in the backfield that makes plays, he’ll cause something to happen.”

Beamer added, “I think Tyrod Taylor is a much better player from a knowledge standpoint and reading coverages then a year ago. He’s farther along there. I also like his ability to throw the football.”

I am listening to SportsCenter, it is Virginia Tech not Va Tech you fuckheads

Tyrod coming back will open up the offense as much as possible with Stinespring calling the plays.  His ability to turn a negative play into a positive will help us extend drives and therefore dictate the pace of the game.  The biggest negative I see is that Glennon will still be taking snaps.  This should be Tyrod’s team and we should allow him to develop a cohesion with the new receivers and help the seniors have a winning and memorable season.  All in all I am happy with the move. However, I wish we weren’t blinded by loyalty at the beginning of the season.  Regardless of seniority if we want to win as many games as possible we need to take a USC like approach to the depth chart: the best players will play.

BRING BACK TYROD

Obviously I was wrong about Sean Glennon being anything better than a toaster oven at the quarterback positiion.  What a fucking loser.  You suck.  You played 5 fucking years and you throw the most bush league interceptions against a school who has the same talent level as a highschool team. What the fuck do you do to prepare?  You cannot read coverage and you aren’t even trusted to make your own audibles. Do us all a favor and quit the team.

Over the last couple of year’s I’ve done my fair share of shitting all over Sean Glennon.  It was difficult watching two years of stellar defense being pissed away due to pathetic offense / quarterback play.  However, I think naming Glennon our starter is the right way to go to win this season and build for the future.  My argument for not playing Glennon last year at all was that our offensive line was shoddy at best.  We needed Tyrod behind center to not lose yards and make plays when the protection broke down.  For a true freshman Tyrod did an exceptional job, but he did make a lot of mistakes.  He needs his redshirt year to relax and learn the offense at a more comfortable pace. When given time in the pocket Glennon can be a very effective passer and a field general.  We return 4/5 starters on the o-line and I can see why Glennon is extremely confident in his ability and being able to lead us in 2008.

Even though I am sold on it, this move can backfire and fuck us over if any of the following happens

  • Glennon gets injured
  • Glennon sucks it up
  • We play a very conservative offense

There isn’t much we can do If Glennon gets injured.  If it is a big one we will need to bring in Tyrod and bite the bullet that he sat out games.  If it is a minor injury we might be able to get by with Cory Holt but we’ll have to see how the running game develops.  If Glennon sucks it up then this was the wrong move and we all have to live with it.  As I said above I think Sean will have a very good year if… We don’t play 1920’s no vertical pass in our offense football.  We might not have a homerun threat, but we still need to go deep!  We need to use Glennon’s live arm to our advantage and stretch out the defense more than we did in 2006.  I don’t care if we connect on 0 passes over 20 yards but for fuck sake at least show you are willing to go deep.  This conservative play calling really hurt Glennon in 2006.

All in all this is the right move for the Hokies.  My expectations are still high for 2008 and so should yours.  Anything less than an ACC Championship is a failure.  Hopefully Glennon will mimic my favorite VT QB of all time Bryan Randall and go out on a high note.
