Jake Heaps is going to forgo four years of drinking and head straight to adulthood after choosing to play quarterback at BYU over Washington. Heaps is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints so the decision isn’t a total shock.
We think recruits picking a top non-BCS school over less successful BCS schools will become commonplace. Non-BCS schools are no longer at a severe disadvantage to reach the BCS. They garnish national attention because of increased television coverage and past successes. Non-BCS powerhouses such as: Boise State, Utah, BYU and TCU have superior talent compared to their conference counterparts. Baring catastrophe a big time recruit attending one of those schools is guaranteed an impressive draft resume and chance to play on the biggest stage at the end of the year. Sounds like a good deal to us.
Gene Chizik wants to appeal to the hip-hop generation.
The first-year coach said his staff is pulling out all the stops to “do the things that appeal to younger guys.”
“We feel like we’re heading in the right direction,” Chizik said before he spoke at a Boy Scouts breakfast at the downtown Sheraton. “We’re always trying to stay on top of everything, think a little bit outside the box. We’re going to continue to do that.”
Gene, we can tell you speaking at a Boy Scout’s breakfast isn’t going to do it for recruits. You can more effectively spill your propaganda to the younguns by broadcasting a webcast to your twitter followers.

Quarterback Phillip Sims, a 6-foot-1, 209-pound native of Chesapeake, Va., said he would sign with the Crimson Tide for the 2010 class. Sims is the team’s eighth commit. A pro-style quarterback, Sims is rated as a four-star player by Rivals.com and Scout.com. Rivals.com has him ranked 52nd overall, while Scout.com has him 29th. Sims also had offers from Virginia Tech, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia and a whole bunch of others. (The Rap Sheet)

Q. What appeals to you about Georgia football? A. Their style of offense. Matthew Stafford played at Georgia, and he has got a great chance to be one of the first players taken in the NFL draft. If Georgia is turning out first-round draft picks like that at quarterback, then I think anyone would take a close look at Georgia. They just put a lot of guys in the league. I also like that Georgia wins. They were ranked No. 1 at one point last year. (AJC.com)

Jeffrey of St. Matthews, S.C., signed with South Carolina last month after an intense recruiting battle with Southern Cal and Tennessee. According to ESPNâs Chris Low, âKiffin told Jeffrey that if he chose the Gamecocks, he would end up pumping gas for the rest of his life like all the other players from that state who had gone to South Carolina.â (AJC.com)

In what is becoming an almost ridiculous scenario, the Longhorns received seven commitments over the weekend and continue to get whomever they target for the class of 2010. The Longhorns might be able to add four or five more recruits to that class, but Texas, through March 1, is almost finished with its class. Our Clemson buddies at Block-C are a little annoyed that Leon Mackey has de-commited from Clemson and committed to South Carolina.
DE Leon Mackey of Hargrave Prep de-committed from Clemson and committed to Sakerlina. He had signed with Virginia Tech coming out of high school, but did not qualify and therefor enrolled in prep school. According to him, Frank Beamer wouldnât release him from his LOI to go to another ACC school, rendering moot his commitment to Clemson. The neckbubble does not forget; the neckbubble does not forgive. So, on he goes to Beamerâs son at Sakerlina.
Here’s the story as I understand it.
- 2/6/2008 – Mackey signs LOI and commits to Virginia Tech
- Mackey never files admissions paperwork to VT because he doesn’t complete a class requirement necessary for admissions.
- 1/5/2009 – Mackey de-commits from VT and commits to Clemson
- 1/29/2009 – Beamer unconditionally releases Mackey from his LOI.
- 2/1/2009 – Mackey visits and commits to South Carolina
So why the sudden change of heart from Mackey? Was it because Beamer was trying to hurt Clemson or spite Mackey? No, it was because of a little known ACC rule.Â
Section VI-3. Intra-Conference National Letter of Intent Rule.
An individual who signs a valid National Letter of Intent with an ACC institution and does not satisfy the one-year attendance requirement or the Junior College Graduation provision of the National Letter of Intent may not represent another ACC institution in intercollegiate athletics competition until the individual has completed one (1) full academic years of residence at the latter ACC institution and shall be charged with the loss of one (1) season of eligibility in all sports. An individual receiving a mutual release per Item 5 of the National Letter of Intent may not represent another ACC institution in intercollegiate athletics competition until the individual has completed one full academic year at the latter ACC institution and shall be charged with the loss of one season of eligibility in all sports.
If Mackey went to Clemson he would have had to sit out a year. But because he went to a SEC school, the ACC rule’s have no jurisdiction and he can play right away. Â The real question is, how did Clemson not see this coming?
*** Update – Mackey didn’t commit to South Carolina…? ***
Clemson beat writer Paul Strelow spoke with Mackey’s Hargrave Military Acadamy teammate (and Clemson commit) safety Jonathan Meeks and he says Mackey hasn’t committed to South Carolina.
âI [Meeks] said, âI heard you [Mackey] took a visit to South Carolina and then committed,â and he was like, âNah, I didnât commit,ââ Meeks said. âBut he does want to play his freshman year. I donât know what heâs going to do.â
If this is true Clemson may be trying to file a waiver with the ACC to allow Mackey to enroll and play his freshman year.

Fuck You Blacksburg. News out of the motherland could not have been worse over the last couple of days.  On Tuesday 4 star QB Kevin Newsome chose to watch JoePa die slow play for Penn State over Virginia Tech. After Pat Devlin transfered Newsome would only have to wait one year to start at PSU and that was the major selling point. In Tyrod we trust, but a backup plan would be nice.  I never thought I would cite her but Heather Dinich reports Jim Weaver has put the kibosh on a head coach in waiting plan for Bud Foster.
“I’ve talked to our president, and I’ve talked to coach [Frank] Beamer and we see the coach-in-waiting concept as something that’s viable for a year, maybe a maximum of two years if you know there’s going to be transition, but coach Beamer could be here another eight, 10, 12 years and we just don’t think that’s the kind of arrangement we want to have with that kind of tenure still possible,” Weaver said.
I don’t think I can handle Beamer’s “put friends in high places” approach to staffing decisions into my late 30s.
Watching this video made me feel a little better.
