The only Hokie Highlight from Thursday night’s offensive abortion.
After Watching Jarret Boykin do his best David Tyree impression one must wonder why more balls aren’t being thrown his way. Oh that’s right Stinespring is calling the plays.
Well we lost to Miami 16-14 and I am not even pissed. Normally Alcohol + VT loss = Extinction Level Event Anger. Tonight for some reason I am comfortably numb and just depressed. We left points on the field, our offense sucked a dong, we didn’t play with a sense of urgency in the fourth quarter (again), our line was poop, our running game was poop, we flip-flopped quarterbacks, we didn’t run the Wild Turkey and we lost. If you’d like to shit on Virginia Tech, you may do so in the comments.
In what bizzaro world do you lose a football game when you’re +4 in the turnover margin and your defense holds the opposing offense to 300 yards? The Hokie football world, that’s where. Once again VT lost a winnable game because of pathetic offense. Yes the final score read 23-28, but the VT offense can only claim 6 of the 23 points of their own. The defense ran back two pick-sixes and forced a fumble on a BC kickoff return that gift wrapped a 30 yard Dustin Keys field goal.
I am sure most of Hokie nation will be calling for Bryan Stinespring’s head this morning and the entire week, but what’s the point. Beamer isn’t making a change now or at the end of the year. His loyalty to Stinespring is more frustrating than the product on the field. We had two weeks to prepare for BC and if it wasn’t for Tyrod Taylor running around like a madman we may not have gained 100 yards of offense. Our entire offense should be embarrassed, from the coaches on down to our timid offensive line. The dropped balls are aggravating, 40 yards on 23 carries by running backs are infuriating but once again watching a mental midget direct our offensive attack is what really pisses me off.
Somebody better get Mickey Andrews depends so he doesn’t mess himself too much when shitting himself while watching his blitzes hit home next week.
I’ve never been so bleh over a victory before. Maybe it had something to do with the fact I had to watch a 10fps stream of the game on my laptop because ESPN Gameplan was having “technical issues.” No… That was just part of it. But before I get all negative here are my positives.
We are learning how to win close games. Learning how to overcome adversity and win close is a huge boost to the psyche of the Hokies. Playing through these types of games now will really help the young Hokies grow up fast. If we do get things turned around I will feel a lot better about our chances if we are down a score late in the ACC Championship and so will the team.
The best thing about this game and win is Tyrod is back. I couldn’t imagine how bad we would have been dominated if he didn’t take every snap.
Now lets go back to the “bleh” and what makes me very nervous going into this week’s UNC game. Our play calling is still predictable and bland. I would like to know just how many screens and quarterback draws we ran and of the quarterback draws how many were actually just passes with broken protection. Maybe Stinespring is innovating the “Screen Option…” It just pisses me off because we suck at executing screens and its probably because (1) we can’t screen to Tyrod and (2) we run far too many every game.
The offensive line looked hungry getting out and run blocking. Sergio “I put on my pants one leg at a time” Render had a couple of great blocks to spring Darren Evans (who looked great). However, the pass blocking is still a huge work in progress.
I am really hoping we have a great week of practice and the 4th time is the charm for the o-line, offense and defense to get it all together. If we don’t execute 100% on all three phases we are going to come back from Chapel Hill with our asses in our hands.
This edition of the BlogPoll Roundtable is being hosted by Braves & Birds. By day he is an ordinary Michigan Alumn, but by night he is covering all of Atlanta sports including Bulldog football. Now onto these excellent questions.
1. How would you rate your program’s service to you in the first two weeks of the season?
Aside from the occasional glimpse of hope from Tyrod Taylor I would have to rate it somewhere in between waterboarding and having to watch the Director’s Cut of Kazaam. I mean losing to ECU wasn’t the end of the world. It was a game we should have won, but they are a legitimate top 15 team. However, struggling offensively against Furman with our stupid as shit two QB system was agonizing. For instance, Tyrod drives the Hokies all the way down the field. Yet on 3rd and goal from the 5 they decide to take him out and put in Glennon the guy with the mobility of a redwood tree. Hello, if shit breaks down he no longer can run it in. Needless to say we got a fieldgoal. Please let those be the last snaps Sean Glennon ever takes at Tech.
2. How happy are you with your program’s overall scheme? We are in a period in which the spread has become a total obsession in the media. If you’re a fan of a spread team, are you happy with the way your program has implemented it? If you’re a fan of a non-spread team, do you wish that your program would convert to this Xenu of offenses?
I hate our offensive scheme and coordinator Bryan Stinespring (as do most Hokies). This is a quote from his bio page.
We want, and expect, to attack both the defense and the field of play in a concerted, aggressive approach. We want to be able to use schemes and formations that utilize our talents while placing pressure on the opponent to adjust and defend. Our goal is to set the tempo of the game and dictate the style of play that is indicative of Virginia Tech football.
In two games we have 572 yards of total offense and 5 touchdowns. Obviously we aren’t meeting one or more of these offensive goals. I really think Virginia Tech could benefit from a new coordinator familiar with running the spread. We always have a 5 star mobile quarterback and tons of offensive speed, but maybe not the best offensive line. Getting these skill players into space would make our offense explosive. There are teams with half our talent yet double the points scored because they run a spread.
3. Rate your stadium’s cleanliness and menu options.
Stadium cleanliness is one aspect of Virginia Tech football I have yet to scrutinize. Simply put if I had to use the bathroom I wouldn’t have to disinfect myself afterwords. No complaints of the food either. We have those giant turkey legs and shaved ice which go great with your favorite smuggled liquor.
4. As an incentive to provide your valued feedback, you will be entered into a drawing for exciting prizes! What one prize would you like for your program?
I’ve beat this horse to death, but a new offensive coordinator.
5. Since we’re all about choices, take one of the following two options for entertainment’s sake:
a. What’s your most memorable experience involving a comment card?
b. If your program were a casual dining chain, which one would it be?
(a) On those evaluation forms you fill out for your professor at the end of the semester I wrote, “Is piss poor one word or two?”
The news to pull off Tyrod Taylor’s redshirt came today during Coach Beamer’s weekly press conference
“We plan to play both Sean Glennon and Tyrod Taylor this weekend,” Beamer said during the press conference.
“The No. 1 need for us is to be a good running football team. For several different reasons that needs to be our strength and I think by putting a guy in the backfield that makes plays, he’ll cause something to happen.”
Beamer added, “I think Tyrod Taylor is a much better player from a knowledge standpoint and reading coverages then a year ago. He’s farther along there. I also like his ability to throw the football.”

I am listening to SportsCenter, it is Virginia Tech not Va Tech you fuckheads

Tyrod coming back will open up the offense as much as possible with Stinespring calling the plays. His ability to turn a negative play into a positive will help us extend drives and therefore dictate the pace of the game. The biggest negative I see is that Glennon will still be taking snaps. This should be Tyrod’s team and we should allow him to develop a cohesion with the new receivers and help the seniors have a winning and memorable season. All in all I am happy with the move. However, I wish we weren’t blinded by loyalty at the beginning of the season. Regardless of seniority if we want to win as many games as possible we need to take a USC like approach to the depth chart: the best players will play.
Bryan Stinespring is a terrible offensive coordinator. He needs to be fired. He does not deserve any more chances. He is a loser and as Hokie fans we all know he needs to go. Our offense once again lost us a big game and his play calling is biggest reason for their failure. It is inexplicable why we stopped handing the ball off to Brandon Ore in the second half on 2nd and 3rd downs. We pissed away first down rushes of 5, 4, 7, 6, etc… yards with stupid bullshit passing plays. POUND THE FUCKING ROCK! Just like on October 25th, against Boston College, our offense was unable to turn a stellar defensive performance into a win. It is as simple as that.
