Archive for the Cincinnati Bearcats Category

I received a tip that the Hokies have a handshake deal in place to play in the 2010 Gator Bowl against either Cincinnati or West Virginia. If Cincinnati beats Pittsburgh (Saturday 10/5 at noon) we’ll play the Mountaineers otherwise it’s the Bearcats. The source is extremely confident and in the know. But, like all non-published agreements there’s always the possibility it can fall through.

In my opinion our chances of making a BCS game were slim and none. The Peach and Gator Bowl have been the logical choices all along. So unless there’s all out chaos (namely Boise State losing and Clemson winning) expect to ring in the New Year in Jacksonville.

Update (10:25am) via Jacksonville.com: Florida State could be selected for Gator Bowl for Bobby Bowden’s final game.

The Times-Union has learned that given certain conditions, Florida State and West Virginia will be invited to play in the Konica Minolta Gator Bowl Jan. 1 at the Jacksonville Municipal Stadium — a matchup that would be FSU coach Bobby Bowden’s final college game, against the team he coached prior to taking over the Seminoles in 1976.

According to sources familiar with the Gator Bowl Association selection process, it was decided Monday night at a meeting of the selection committee to match the teams under two conditions: that Bowden actually retire as the FSU coach today, as has been widely reported, and that the Seminoles are eligible to be invited to the game, given the outcome of the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game Saturday and the ACC bowl selection guidelines.

Update (12/2 1:50am) via GoVolsXtra: In another “dream” matchup, Hokies versus Volunteers in the Peach Bowl.

The Chick-fil-A had identified UT as its top target if it slipped past the Outback, and the Vols and Hokies (9-3, 6-2 ACC) now look set to play in Atlanta on Dec. 31 at 7:30 p.m.

The only thing that matters in this fashion show game is that the Hokies win so I win a blogger bet with our friends at Girls Don’t Know Sports. The winner of said bet gets to defile the other’s banner atop their blog which will remain in place for a week. Please don’t fuck this up Hokies.

This is our new Thursday night thread. We hope YOU our readers and friends in the blogosphere pop your heads in and engage in a little conversation.

divine Divine Predictions – Week 4

Cincinnati 30 @ South Florida 21 – I’m taking Cinci because of Tony Pike, Tony Pike and Tony Pike. He’s been a machine and the Bearcats have won on the road in a tougher venue (Corvallis, Oregon [St]). I’ll be focused on the play of B.J. Daniels and how he responds playing in his first major home game. The boys in green over at Sparty like Cinci too.

Oklahoma 38 versus Texas 31 – I haven’t been impressed with Texas lallygagging against Wyoming, Texas Tech and Colorado. I have a man-crush on Sam Bradford; respect the golf skills. On the outside (and I stress outside) chance VT runs the table we’ll need helping getting to the MNC and a Sooner win would be just that. So my pick is based 25% with my head and 100%heart, because I’M ALL HEART BABY. And for shits and grins: know your rivalry.

Around the Interwebs

Please hire Jagodzinski. Please hire Jagodzinski. Thorn in the side of Virginia Tech’s ass Coach Jeff Jagodzinski has been contacted by the Jets in regards to their head coach vacancy. Jags is a great coach and Eagles fans better hope BC extends his contract and locks him up. Update: BC has told Jagodzinski that he will be fired if he interviews for the Jets job. Awesome.

There would’ve been huge oranges at Diddy’s party.

the Cincinnati Bearcats booked the Fontainebleau hotel in Miami Beach. The only problem, Diddy also booked this fine establishment for a New Years Eve bash. I’m not going to ask how the Bearcats can afford a $600/night hotel, but I will question their coach’s judgment.

Coach Brian Kelly thought ‘it would be one giant distraction’ having Diddy there, so he rewarded his players for their Big East win and moved the team to another hotel at the last moment — ruining all chances of partying with the Bad Boy crew.

Donald Brown will take his 2,083 yards and 18 touchdowns to the NFL. Since we cannot find highlights of his 261 yard day against Buffalo, we’ll show you him dominating Virginia.

Marve now allowed to go to bad SEC schools.

Robert Marve was given permission to transfer earlier this week as long as he doesn’t go to a school in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Southeastern Conference or in Florida.

But late Friday night, the University of Miami softened its stance. Instead of barring Marve from going to any SEC schools, he is only barred from attending Florida, Tennessee and LSU.

Around the Interwebs is a whenever-the-eff-I-feel-like-it-a-week summary of the day’s news in college football. If you’de like your link to appear email it to cgb [at] collegegameaballs [dot] com.

Blog Hero

As Scott Van Pelt so eloquently put it 7 year old, Garrett Monroe is, “Blog Hero, because you’re going to be the hero of every idiot on the blogs because Erin Andrews gave you an interview.”

eaandkid Blog Hero

How did the little guy get EA to kneel down to him?  He got trucked by junior wide receiver Mardy Gilyard (45 second mark).

ESPN won’t let this video be embeded, so you have to go there to view it.

Blog Hero, you’re an inspiration to us all and are everything that is right with our craft.  You deserve copious amounts of candy while trick-or-treating tomorrow night after taking that hit like a champ!

Ben Mauk filing Lawsuit Against NCAA

Bionic Mauk

Bionic Mauk

Ben Mauk is taking it the man.

Mauk filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the NCAA, less than a week after the association rejected his final appeal for another year of eligibility at Cincinnati.

http://www.sportsline.com/collegefootball/story/10931879

While playing against Syracuse for Wake Forest in 2006 Mauk went to recover a fumble and completely got his arm and shoulder fucked up.

He suffered a fractured humerus, a dislocated shoulder, and a torn labrum. Shortly after the injury, he underwent reconstructive surgery in which surgeons put a titanium plate with eight screws in his upper arm and installed three anchors in the shoulder.

After being replaced by Riley Skinner he transfered to Cincinatti where he had a very successful 2007.  Mauk has been denied eligibility for 2008.

I am not sure where I stand on this issue.  On the one hand I feel bad that the kid worked his ass off to get back on the field.  On the other hand those are the breaks (no pun intended).  If he were granted the 6th year where would the NCAA draw the line? Can the NCAA be extremely subjective and say well he only played 50 snaps, 100 snaps, 2 games, 10 minutes so that doesn’t qualify as a year played.  Either way if past success is any indicator of the future Mauk will be able to bounce back.
