Hungover Thoughts: Virginia Tech-Alabama

My goal was to avoid being on easy target for Brian’s schadenfreude, so here are some rational thoughts clouded by the back end of about 20 beers.

  • The game was a whole bunch of emotions: exciting, depressing, brutal, entertaining and predictable.
  • It was awesome to meet F4H, Winfield and Dane and tailgate with them. They look like good guys to have on your side in a fight.
  • It was more of the same from the offense.
  • The defense played amazing, but was gassed and folded late in the fourth.
  • Fuck.
  • Some of Stinespring’s calls were horrendous. Once again 2009 will feature the option out of double and single back shotgun sets and much like the last 5 years our lunch was/will be eaten. We lost a fumble on a option in the red zone. STOP WITH THE OPTIONS.
  • Ryan Williams looks like he will be a stud.
  • Our offensive line cannot pass block nor establish a new line of scrimmage when running the ball. They are soft. Read this and get motivated. Please.
  • What happened to Greg Boone and David Wilson?
  • More mistakes on special teams, ugh.
  • 99% of Alabama fans are class acts. But one old timer asked me as I was walking out, “What’s a Hokie?” As I began to answer he quickly interjected and said “a damn loser!” Enjoy death old man.

Hey great game. Frank Beamer thrives on mistakes, and we made enough for both teams. It took us a full 3.5 quarters to get our adjustments and get our run game(Ingram) moving to help us set up the long ball. Up until the 4th quarter, VT was in the hunt. You guys will win alot of games, and I think your D-Line, once they get some more stamina, will be a premier unit to be dealt with throughout the year.

@MPP Great game to you guys too, Bama played their balls off and deserved it. I was impressed with mcelroy’s composure in the fourth quarter. I’m looking forward to watching you guys rematch Florida.

Well another year where we’ll win the ACC and not much else. FYI: Boone got hurt

Logan Thomas is going to make our offense verticle and quite honesty, our national championship hopes go through him and not Tyrod. No disrespect to Tyrod..Just not going to take us to the promise land.

It is a team effort, we will never be able to go vertical if we can’t detect and pick up a blitz.

Yeah but if there was a threat for the long ball, there would be a lot less blitzing going on and there would be more running lanes for the backs to take advantage of. I watched Logan play a couple of times in high school. he is the real deal. He is poised , accurate with the long or short ball, a quicker decision maker, and athletic enough to run the ball when neccesary. Tyrod is an athlete playing quarterback. Logan is an athlete and a quarterback playing quarterback. He has the “it” factor. That thing that Tom Brady has and Bret Favre had in his prime. Logan will be a first round draft pick (maybe no. 1) as a quarterback in the NFL…I promise you. I am not disagreeing with you about the pass protection. It was really bad. but it is easy to pin your ears back when you know that the opposing teams QB is not a threat to throw the long ball…and the fact that he did not scramble…???? two years from now…you will be totally agreeing with me about Thomas. Logan is going to take this program to where BAMA and Florida is now. We have the athletes now but no matter how good your defense is (I love Buds defenses), if the offense can’t sustain any drives to keep them off the field, they will wear down like they did in the 4th qtr. Yeah , we will win the ACC and go to another Orange Bowl but don’t we do that most of the time? Vick gave us the legs and the arm which took us to the national championshp game….If Tyrod can give us the arm with the legs he already has, then we should be OK…but if not, there will be some disgruntled fans in Hokie nation. I love Tyrod.. but we are a top 10 team that should be putting up top 10 numbers…on offense. Nothing personal…this is business. Get it done Tyrod or start looking over your shoulder like you made Glennon look over his a couple of years ago.

@at I agree with what your saying, but it is a chicken and egg problem. We will never even be able to show the threat of a deep ball without having an offensive line that can pass block, a running back that can pick up the blitz, a quarterback to throw it accurately deep, a coordinator to set the play up and a receiver to catch the ball. Because in order to be a respectable threat, you need to execute once in a while.

Until further notice, the only person on the offense I don’t blame for our lack of production is Boone. He’s somehow been able to overcome shitty coaching and play calling and has turned himself into one tough SOB who contributes every time he’s called upon.

As for Tyrod, when we recruited him I thought he was the final piece. I couldn’t have been any more wrong. I hope he proves me otherwise, but for right now he’s a bust. I hope you are right about Logan Thomas, but even if you are it won’t matter because he’s only one part of a totally broken down car.

A broken down car being driven over a cliff by Stinespring…

I Agree with you cgb. I just hope that if things don’t change, coach beamer will look at another offensive coordinator. Our recruiting is to damn good to let a poor system ruin that . Either we become a big time program or we just stay a regional team like years pasts. If our coaching staff wants the best players, they must give them the best coaches. Period.

VT played a great game against my Tide and had me sweating most of the night. You guys have an awesome defense that just got run down by the end of the game. Thank God there are four quarters in football.

I predict that VT will win the ACC again. You guys are class acts (not like our little brother ‘Auburn’) and I wish you guys the best and I will be rooting for you the rest of the way.
