Over/Under: 2009 Win Totals

Over the weekend Vegas released the opening lines on 2009 win totals. Here’s what we like. No pushing allowed.

OVER Penn State 9.5: They only have one losable game among the first seven @Illinois. We think they open 7-0, but we’ll be conservative and take 6 wins. They’re going to win @Michigan, @Northwestern and home against Indiana. That gives us 9 and they’ll pick up the 10th against either OSU, @MSU or in a bowl.

OVER Duke 3.5: You can’t blame Vegas (0r anyone) for being so low on the Dukies. They’ve won 8 games over the last five years. The lowest of any division 1a team. But they’re winning at least 4 games. They play two 1aa teams (Richmond and North Carolina Central), have soon to be four-year-starter quarterback Thaddeus Lewis under center and are coached by a more than capable David Cutcliffe.

UNDER West Virginia 8.5: Pat White along with four offensive lineman are gone. 2009 won’t be a total bust, but the Mountaineers will struggle to find their identity and only win 8 games.

OVER Mississippi 9: It’s no secret we’ve been bullish on Ole Miss. Jevan Snead is one helluva quarterback, their non-conference schedule is a joke and they luck out with drawing: @South Carolina, @Vanderbilt and Tennessee from the SEC East. It’s also interesting to note that the Rebels are 25/1 to win the BCS Championship.

OVER Virginia Tech 9: The Hokies have won 10 games in each of the last five seasons. USC and Texas are the only other teams to do so. 2009’s squad is more talented than any of the previous five (returning 16 starters) and their schedule sets up beautifully.

UNDER Kansas State 5.5: Ron Prince’s power-towel waving ass is gone and that’s a step in the right direction. Unfortunately so is Josh Freeman. We cannot find a 6th win on the schedule. So it seems like Bill Snyder will need more than one season to get K-State back to a bowl.

Since we don’t condone gambling all bets will be made with Monopoly money. Feel free to us why we’re wrong or let us know who you’re taking in the comments.

Sort of have to take the over for Michigan at 6. Most of our tough games are home and then we have Iowa at night away… plus we have a freshman QB, maybe it will be a push.
