The whole Greg Paulus saga started when we heard he might end up in the NFL with the Packers (he still could). Then we heard he was a lock to take one of Michigan’s final three scholarships and compete with Tate Forcier for the starting quarterback job. That fizzled out. And now it’s <airquotes>likely</airquotes> Paulus will end up with the Orange. Now that’s a destination that makes sense to us for a couple of reasons.
The homecoming story is all well and good, but that’s not what we’re talking about. For lack of a better option, Syracuse is looking to the future at quarterback. After one day of spring practice redshirt freshman Ryan Nassib was named the starter replacing 2008’s signal caller senior Cameron Dantly. While Paulus is definitely not the future, he could be that other option, the bridge that Dantly is not. Nassib would then be able to learn the system while the equally experienced, but more talented Paulus plays in 2009.
Most importantly playing at Syracuse will actually provide Paulus the opportunity to lead the Orange to a successful season. Success is relative. At Michigan anything other than a New Year’s Day or better bowl and win over Ohio State is a failed season. For ‘Cuse, a team that hasn’t made a bowl game in four seasons, six wins and a trip to somewhere warmer than upstate New York is as good as the BCS.
