Even though there is no magic formula that defines a coach’s success, its pretty obvious the most important factor is winning. A Sunday through Friday coach will never outlast a Saturday coach. The good news is, the coaches that win on Saturdays, do the same Sunday through Friday. Successful coaches are role models to young men as well as leaders in their community. When I think of a successful coach both on and off the field Pete Carroll instantly comes to mind.
As a two-time National Champion Coach Carroll spends his Saturdays winning in the Colosseum, but he spends his weeknights helping to stop gang violence in Los Angeles.
On the clear dark LA nights Carroll ventures out alone and confronts rival gang members trying to broker peace. His celebrity status affords him instant credibility and respect. Often he is able to stop gang conflicts before they start. He also brings in his other team, the troubled Los Angeles youth, to watch the Trojans practice. Meeting the USC players, some of whom have come from the same gang neighborhoods, inspire these young kids to strive for more out of life. Its an understatement to say that Coach Carroll has gone above and beyond to help out his community.
The Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award is given to the coach that demonstrates sportsmanship, integrity, responsibility and excellence. Coach Carroll demonstrates all of these qualities every day of the week.
