Like most college football junkies I didn’t know what to do with myself on Saturday with no games on to watch*.  I settled on playing NCAA 09, a game I dominate at, for a little bit.  That didn’t fix the withdrawal and I thought why couldn’t the NCAA make all teams eligible for post season play.  A half-assed summary of my plan is below.

  • All teams not eligible for or not invited to a bowl game may schedule and play an exhibition game against another team not eligible for or not invited to a bowl game.
  • The players may not receive any sort of “bowl benefit”.
  • The participating schools may not receive any financial compensation from a sponsor.
  • The games may only be played at one of the two participating universities’ stadiums.
  • The games must take place the Saturday after Championship Weekend and before the first bowl weekend.
Think about the match up possibilities… This season Michigan, Tennessee, Colorado, Illinois, Arizona State, Auburn, Arkansas and Virginia were all 5-7.  It would be beyond bitching if these teams could call each up, schedule a game, split the gate and play.  They have nothing to lose and we as fans have great games to gain.

*Division 1aa is soft, cuddly and mildly entertaining but not a substitute for div 1a games.

Here’s why I don’t like that idea. One of the big pluses of making a bowl game is the extra practice. Most teams use some of the practice time between the end of the regular season and the bowl as a precursor to spring practice. Younger players get reps, a look to the future, so on and so forth. I doubt our coaches do this because they don’t even spend the practice time getting ready for the goddamn bowl, let alone the next season.

So by letting the teams that didn’t qualify for a bowl play an extra game, you’re giving them a reward they did not earn, a chance to get a jump start on the next season. And as a staunch hater of Michigan, Tennessee and france, I don’t want to see that. Screw ‘em. Even if it means I have to watch NW Missouri vs. MN Duluth, it’s better than giving extra practice time to schools that didn’t earn it.

Yeah the extra practices are a benefit no doubt about it. But, its just seems like such a minimal reward to me. The players are already together all year practicing at some capacity. An extra 1-2 weeks at the end of the season doesn’t seem like it will give a huge edge to any team.
