We Beat Georgia Tech but Our Offense Still Sucks

I’ve never been so bleh over a victory before.  Maybe it had something to do with the fact I had to watch a 10fps stream of the game on my laptop because ESPN Gameplan was having “technical issues.”  No… That was just part of it. But before I get all negative here are my positives.

We are learning how to win close games.  Learning how to overcome adversity and win close is a huge boost to the psyche of the Hokies.  Playing through these types of games now will really help the young Hokies grow up fast.  If we do get things turned around I will feel a lot better about our chances if we are down a score late in the ACC Championship and so will the team.

The best thing about this game and win is Tyrod is back.  I couldn’t imagine how bad we would have been dominated if he didn’t take every snap.

Now lets go back to the “bleh” and what makes me very nervous going into this week’s UNC game. Our play calling is still predictable and bland.  I would like to know just how many screens and quarterback draws we ran and of the quarterback draws how many were actually just passes with broken protection.  Maybe Stinespring is innovating the “Screen Option…”  It just pisses me off because we suck at executing screens and its probably because (1) we can’t screen to Tyrod and (2) we run far too many every game.

The offensive line looked hungry getting out and run blocking.  Sergio “I put on my pants one leg at a time” Render had a couple of great blocks to spring Darren Evans (who looked great).  However, the pass blocking is still a huge work in progress.

I am really hoping we have a great week of practice and the 4th time is the charm for the o-line, offense and defense to get it all together.  If we don’t execute 100% on all three phases we are going to come back from Chapel Hill with our asses in our hands.
