I proudly present this week’s BlogPoll. Virginia Tech is taking, what will probably be, a season long vacation from the poll. You cannot run a Pop Warner offense and expect to be among the big boys. After their beatdown by Alabama Clemson is hanging on by a thread. I was thinking of dropping them completely but I think they would beat any team that would replace them. Can someone at Pitt tell Wanny that there is no playoff and he really needs to beat teams like Bowling Green.
After their impressive wins both ECU and Oregon crack the top 25. I am really pulling for Skip “I wish I wasn’t related to Lou” Holtz to upset WVU next week. Oregon really showed me they can still throw up the points in life AD (after Dixon). Mizzou moves into the top 3 and I am showing Alabama a lot of love. Obligatory rhetorical question, how impressive were both Missouri and Alabama’s defenses against loaded offenses on Saturday night…
Anyways if you feel strongly about how I fucked up let me know what you think before I submit my final poll on Tuesday night.

BRING BACK TYROD
Obviously I was wrong about Sean Glennon being anything better than a toaster oven at the quarterback positiion. What a fucking loser. You suck. You played 5 fucking years and you throw the most bush league interceptions against a school who has the same talent level as a highschool team. What the fuck do you do to prepare? You cannot read coverage and you aren’t even trusted to make your own audibles. Do us all a favor and quit the team.

Over the last couple of year’s I’ve done my fair share of shitting all over Sean Glennon. It was difficult watching two years of stellar defense being pissed away due to pathetic offense / quarterback play. However, I think naming Glennon our starter is the right way to go to win this season and build for the future. My argument for not playing Glennon last year at all was that our offensive line was shoddy at best. We needed Tyrod behind center to not lose yards and make plays when the protection broke down. For a true freshman Tyrod did an exceptional job, but he did make a lot of mistakes. He needs his redshirt year to relax and learn the offense at a more comfortable pace. When given time in the pocket Glennon can be a very effective passer and a field general. We return 4/5 starters on the o-line and I can see why Glennon is extremely confident in his ability and being able to lead us in 2008.
Even though I am sold on it, this move can backfire and fuck us over if any of the following happens
- Glennon gets injured
- Glennon sucks it up
- We play a very conservative offense
There isn’t much we can do If Glennon gets injured. If it is a big one we will need to bring in Tyrod and bite the bullet that he sat out games. If it is a minor injury we might be able to get by with Cory Holt but we’ll have to see how the running game develops. If Glennon sucks it up then this was the wrong move and we all have to live with it. As I said above I think Sean will have a very good year if… We don’t play 1920’s no vertical pass in our offense football. We might not have a homerun threat, but we still need to go deep! We need to use Glennon’s live arm to our advantage and stretch out the defense more than we did in 2006. I don’t care if we connect on 0 passes over 20 yards but for fuck sake at least show you are willing to go deep. This conservative play calling really hurt Glennon in 2006.
All in all this is the right move for the Hokies. My expectations are still high for 2008 and so should yours. Anything less than an ACC Championship is a failure. Hopefully Glennon will mimic my favorite VT QB of all time Bryan Randall and go out on a high note.

- Sean Glennon barfs at your scepticism.

UNC is coming off a 4-8 season where their marquee win was against the 1-11 Duke intramural squad. However, the Tar Heels are the trendy pick to win ACC Coastal division because of some very close losses. As a Hokie I’ve become caught up in figuring out whether or not they are the real deal. The three reasons why I think UNC will go from 4-8 to 8-4 (or better) are: a lot of returning talent, a very favorable schedule and top notch coaching.
Quarterback T.J. Yates had an impressive start to his 2007 season throwing 9 touchdowns and only 3 interceptions but fizzled out finishing the season with 14 tds and 18 picks. Yates is going to have to cut that shit and be productive for the entire season for the Heels to go bowling and even come close to sniffing the asshole of the ACC Championship Game. He gets to throw to Hakeem Nicks who is straight nasty and could put up over 1,000 yards. The running game was suspect last year and sophomore Greg Little needs to rush for 1,000+ to keep the offense moving in the right direction.
The Heels’ schedule sets up extremely well and here is how I see their season unfolding.
- McNeese State – Blowout W
- at Rutgers – I don’t think Butch Davis will be able to get past his former assistant coach.
- Virginia Tech – UNC might be a favorite and this game will be extremely telling of how the UNC season will go. A win has them on the fast track to the ACC Coastal division title, a close loss won’t be too devistating but a blowout will be devistating. I think they lose a really close one.
- at Miami – Miami has too much talent
- Connecticut – This will be another extremely close game but in the end UNC will pull it out.
- Notre Dame – I really hate picking ND to win
- at Virginia – W
- Boston College – No Matt Ryan means no W for BC
- Georgia Tech – GT will be competitive for a while, but this is the year for everyone to beat down on the Wreck.
- at Maryland – A solid road win
- NC State – I really miss Chuck Amato and his sexy tan, permed hair and suave sunglasses. W
- at Duke – It will be close, but UNC wins.
We all know Butch Davis is a great head coach and recruiter. One thing he is not is a miracle worker. UNC is still 1-2 years away from being a legitimate ACC contender. Going 8-4 this year with a chance to play in a bowl will definitely set the Heels up for break-out 2009. However, maybe I am wrong and Davis pulls out the W against VT and cruises to the ACC Championship Game…

Each week a member of the Blogpoll will be hosting a roundtable this week it is Doug at Hey Jenny Slater. Great Questions!
1. In his “visiting lecturers” series posted on Every Day Should Be Saturday over the past few months, Orson Swindle asked each participant to explain which country, during which historical period, their team most resembles. Let’s bring everything up to the present day and ponder: Which current sovereign nation is your team? Or to look at it another way, how does your team fit into the “world” of college football?
Virginia Tech is the above average team with elite talent that has yet to get over the hump. We are the Eagles of the college football world. The one great program to never take home all the bacon.
2. Every preseason roundup has to have some discussion of who’s overrated, but let’s go beyond that. Which team do you think is poised to crap the bed in the biggest way this season relative to high expectations, and which game do you think will begin their slide into ignominy?
Its definitely Clemson and I’ve already beat that one to death.
3. On the flip side of that coin, which team do you think is going to burst out of nowhere to become 2008’s biggest overachiever — this year’s version of Kansas ‘07, as it were — and what’s going to be the big upset that makes us all finally sit up and take notice of them?
Out of curiosity was Kansas’ biggest upset last year when Mangino passed on his fourth helping of beef wellington…? I think picking a non BCS team is cheating because 1) it is easier to just say BYU or Fresno St 2) Kansas is a BCS team. I am going to go with Uconn. Much like Kansas they have been progressing from a loser program, each year they have been learning how to win and they play an easy \ winnable schedule. If this prediction is going to work out they are going to have to win at UNC (another team with high hopes) on 10/4 and the following game at Rutgers on 10/18. By the way parity in college football is killing the “come from no where” teams.
4. Here’s an “I’ll hang up and listen” question. I put Ohio State and Oklahoma #1 and #2, respectively, despite their recent high-profile BCS face-plants. Where did you rank those two teams, and did those BCS issues have anything to do with it?
I have Oklahoma #3 and tOSU #4. Last year is last year and I didn’t rank either of them lower because of their recent BCS struggles. I simply thought they were not as good as Florida or USC and better than everyone else.
5. Last season was a statistical outlier in countless ways, not the least of which was the fact that we ended up with a two-loss team as national champion. Do you think anyone plays a strong enough schedule to get MNC consideration as a two-loss team this year? Conversely, do you see anybody managing to sail into the national-championship game undefeated?
The only two loss team that comes to mind for me is Auburn. If they are able to beat WVU and win the SEC they could lose to two lower ranked SEC teams and sneak into the MNC if the same bat-shit scenarios that went down last year repeat. Obviously Ohio State has the best shot. The Big Ten is absolute garbage and they get USC early with two inexperienced quarterbacks and injuries. Speaking of the Big Ten.
6. OK, time for some Olympic fever. Which athlete from the Beijing Olympics — any sport, any country, with the exception of USA basketball since those guys are already pros — would you most want to add to your team’s roster this season? No worries about age, eligibility, or even gender; we’ll worry about that crap later.
I am going to go with the Chinese Table Tennis Team. While they wouldn’t play a down Virginia Tech could finally replace dumb-fuck Bryan Stinespring at offensive coordinator with this six man brain trust.
