The stance ESPN is taking on teams like Arizona St, Mizzou, Boston College, etc getting screwed over by the BCS is the following: Keep in mind the BCS is only supposed to figure out #1 and #2. Absolute Bullshit.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowl_Championship_Series#BCS_bowl_games
Aside from the obvious Notre Dame special case the final BCS rankings impact plenty of other non #1 and #2 schools.
The BCS Sucks, however we are stuck with it until 2010. Its easy for everyone to offer the same +1 or playoff suggestion, but at CollegeGameBalls we’re doing some actual thinking. Since it is already responsible for so much we should allow the system to govern all aspects of all the BCS Bowls. These changes need to be implemented for the following seasons.
- The only teams eligible for the BCS National Championship Game are outright conference champions. No more of this we can’t even win our own conference yet we should be national champion bullshit.
- Fuck The Rose Bowl and their tradition. Schedule the games based on their final BCS ranking: #1 v #2. #3 v #4, etc. There are only two exceptions to this rule: the teams that would play are from the same conference or have played already during the regular season. To resolve either of those exceptions simply match the highest ranked team against the next highest ranked team and move the replaced team to another BCS game (if available).
- The computers need to again account for 50% of the formula. It was embarrassing to see coaches lobbying for their team to play in the National Championship. Kudos to Frank Beamer for sitting back, drinking bourbon and watching it all happen.
- Announce the BCS Schedule promptly at 8:00pm eastern time. I will never, ever buy a Pontiac now.
- Have a panel of 11 football experts review, edit and approve all Non National Championship BCS Bowl Games. Missouri got absolutely fucked by being left out over the likes of Illinios and Kansas. Two teams they beat.

Yo, Mizzou was 9, you are an idiot.

It doesn’t appear you’re doing any thinking here at all. The Rose Bowl has its own contract with ABC, the Pac-10 and the Big Ten. Whether you agree or like it, the Rose Bowl can make more money on its own with the Big Ten and Pac-10 champs. So you can say fuck the Rose Bowl, they’ll just go off with Disney/ESPN/ABC and make more money than they know what to do with.
Besides, if you have a #1 vs. #2 game…who the fuck cares about #3 vs. #4? Boy, that #9 vs. #10 game will be a doozy!

Fuck the Rose Bowl. If they want to go off and do their own thing, fine, but the Pac 10 and Big 10 need to quit sucking at life and abandon the Rose Bowl for a better system if the Rose Bowl walks away. The Rose Bowl does not control anything. The Pac 10 and Big 10 control the Rose Bowl.
Also, it should be 1 v 4 and 2 v 3 with the winners playing in a +1 game.

+1 is for suckers.
The only thing keeping college football from being as great as NFL and NCAA March Madness: A tournament format. I’m so sick of excuse makers beating around the bush on this. The only potential excuse is greed. While it’s not my idea, they should definitely go with a NCAA Hoops-style 16 team tournament format. 11 conference champs and five at-large teams selected by a committee.
Benefit: Top ranked teams get a virtual bye week. OSU/LSU/VT/USC/OU/etc. vs. champs from the Sun Belt/MAC/etc in the first round. At the same time, it creates an opportunity for huge upsets. Higher seed plays at home until the Final Four. (Asking fans to travel for four weeks would be a bit much.)
2 final four games and the finals covers three of the 4 BCS bowls. Rotate one out of the big three every year - unless the Rose Bowl scoffs - in that case just let the Rose Bowl do its thing and move on.
But what about the bowls? What about them…there are still plenty of .500 or better teams available for the remaining bowls. Do we really think that any FEWER people would go to the International Bowl or the New Mexico bowl to watch Florida Western Tech play against Corpus Christi Community College?
But what about the money? I don’t profess to be an expert on this, but isn’t the NCAA pretty much allowing bowl committees or groups to keep the money as it stands now? Why not have the home team (or conference) keep a portion of the gate with the rest going to the NCAA.
But what about the students (too many games and interference with school)? Easiest argument in the world to shoot down. WHAT ABOUT ALL OTHER NCAA FOOTBALL DIVISIONS? Somehow, this isn’t a problem for (former) I-AA, II or III. Even more interesting about these schools, they manage to make it happen with smaller athletic budgets, little if any access to chartered planes, and lesser athletic facilities. Furthermore, their ability to keep playing after the conclusion of the regular season brings about (in my opinion) better product. Why are we okay with 5-7 week layoffs before crowning champions?
One day, we’ll look back at the current system and wonder WTF were we thinking and who in the world was in charge ($$$)?

@Sean - I’de rather see teams match up based on their final ranking (indicative of how good they are) not their ability to draw a crowd. Also, the Rose Bowl is still part of the BCS, they just have a separate television arrangement. The Rose Bowl is on ABC when they don’t host the National Championship game.
@jackpocket - Yo, what are you talking about?

The Rose Bowl is retarded. Demote it to high second-tier status and promote the Cotton Bowl.

You have it backwards. The BCS should only control the National Championship, since the game no longer rotates amongst bowls. The NC game should pick a venue and stick with it, also.

The Rose Bowl is THE premier bowl. Most people hate that fact, but talk to any PAC 10 or BIG 10 fan and they’ll tell you the same. Nearly everyone believes it, but SEC fans for example can not accept that fact. Notice how noone mentions the last time “x” team played in the Sugar Bowl or the Fiesta Bowl. Yet you hear it all the time about any number of teams within and outside of the PAC, BIG 11. Georgia is a perfect example.

Best solution I could think of is just make the Rose Bowl the national championship each year. Sure, Fiesta/Orange/Sugar will fight tooth and nail against that, but the Big 10/Pac 10 relationship with the Rose Bowl is so strong, and the Rose Bowl really is the most prestigious bowl, which combined makes me think that it’s not entirely impossible. The Tournament of Roses folks would gladly say farewell to their “tradition” if they were to be “officially” the most important bowl. Plus, New Year’s in sunny southern California is pretty damn awesome.

@mtothep - The National Championship is the premier game. The Rose Bowl is a touch more prestigious because it was the first bowl game. However, a BCS bowl is a BCS bowl.
@SDM - Its not an awful idea, but its unfair that USC would potentially get home field in the MNC every year.
