Week 3 Recap

  • Louisville has a high octane offense, but after losing a shootout to Kentucky they won’t have a shot at the National Championship.
  • Florida is really good. If the young defense can keep opponents to 21 or less points the offense will do the rest and the Gators will be defending their championship.
  • LSU is good, I still don’t believe in them and think they will stumble a couple of times along the way.
  • Right now USC is the best team in the country. They took apart the Nebraska defense piece by piece on Saturday night. Booty looked excellent and any one of the horses in the stable of running backs could start at any other school in the country.
  • What is going on in Texas? They narrowly escaped a loss against a far worse UCF team.
  • Nick Saban has Alabama back into the AP Top 20 and fans energized.
  • If you have seen 5 minutes of Boston College football this year you already know Matt Ryan is pretty good. Not many people like BC or watch their games so I figured I would point it out.
  • Hopefully Virginia Tech can follow the same game plan BC used when they play The Ramblin Wreck.

Although we didn’t beat Ohio by as much as I would have liked, I was pleased to see an effective quarterback and a return of the defensive unit (albeit, against an inferior Ohio offense). Our oline needs to tighten up and the receivers (cough cough JOSH MORGAN cough cough EDDIE ROYAL cough cough) need to stop dropping balls. With two more sacrificial lambs before the meat of the season begins, I am confident in our chances in the ACC.

Ga Tech doesn’t look as solid as once thought, that can be attributed to looking good against terrible teams. BC looks good but I am still liking our chances on a Thursday night in Lane.

CGB, I like your top 10 but with a few changes.

    1 USC- For obvious reasons.

2 LSU- They passed their first test by soundly beating VT, they have tons of talent on D, and their offense is picking up. I was reticent to put them at 2 at first but they have proven they deserve it.

3 Florida- Have to give it to the Gators, they hung 59 points on #22 Tenn last week. This team is young, but is loaded with talent. Urban Meyer has a chance to get Florida more titles. Both SEC and Nat Champ.

4 Oklahoma- This team plays well all around, but having a Red Shirt Freshman QB might cause problems if they face a team with some D. They will win the Big 12.

5 Cal- This team has tons of speed, Desean Jackson is a threat as a play maker, Nate Longshore looks more confident and seems to be making better decisions in the pocket.

6 WVU- I almost put them in my top 5, but thier lack of defense makes it hard for me to take them seriously. As Louisville already discovered scoring is good, not being able to prevent scoring leads to losses. The combination of White, Slaton, Reynaud, and Devine makes this team unbelievable on O. If they can find a way to tighten up their D, I would give them the nod for top 5.

7 Rutgers- I know, I know, its a huge stretch, but there arent many other teams that deserve a top 10 ranking. Texas struggled in its opener against Ark St, and then almost lost to Central Florida this week. They do not look like a top 10 team. Wisconsin nearly fell to UNLV, and got a scare from The Citadel. Rutgers has a solid defense, and a great run game. Mike Teel is emerging as a pretty good QB too.

8 Penn St- Although the Big Ten is overrated this year, PSU looks like the real deal out of the conference. Huge wins in all 3 of their games, their Offense is picking up and thier D was solid from day one.

9 Boston College- I agree with CGB, upsetting Ga Tech was a big win for this team. They are legit contenders for the ACC Atlantic, if they can get past Clemson, I think they will play VT for the title.

10 Ohio State- They havent wowed anyone yet this year, which it was hard for me to put them in my top 10, but they look better than Texas and Wisconsin so here they are. Not flashy, but consistent and last weeks win over Washington kind of validates them.

I just couldn’t help but play the “which one of things…is not like the other?” game from Sesame Street with this top 10. I chose Boston College.

Boston College has one of the best quarterbacks in the country, a stout defense and it seems like a pretty capable head coach. They totally dominated an excellent Georgia Tech team.

The stats speak for themselves. BC beat the defending ACC champ Wake Forest in week one, trounced NC St in week two, and just upset the number 15 team in the country. They gained over 500 total yards, while allowing only 63 rushing yards against GT. BC’s defense allows on average only 40 rushing yards a game, and has 9 INTs and two forced fumbles. “If one of these things is not like the other,” it would have to be, in my opinion, Ohio State. They had very bland wins against Akron and Washington. It takes awhile for their offense to get going, which will pose problems for them down the road when they play Penn St. Fortunately for them, they get to beat up on a bunch of weak Big Ten teams before that, so they might have it together by that game.

I didn’t mean to suggest BC is bad, just that it’s surprising to see them in there, and wondered if it was deserved. You all put up their numbers and achievements, so I will definately stand corrected. I still want to see if they can keep it up throughout their season, though. Ohio State is very suspect as well, great point.
