Rutgers is taking the next step towards becoming a traditional powerhouse football program. They have already become a mainstay in the Top 25 polls, will no doubt be going to another bowl game, have stellar head coach Greg Schiano signed until 2012 and are discussing stadium expansion. The fun part is now the New Jersey fans are really starting to get into it.
…a slotback who already spent three quarters being chased and tackled by gangs of defensive linemen and linebackers, all weighing at least 100 pounds more than him, was then given a dose of Rutgers’ student section class.
”You got f—ed up. You got f—ed up. You got f–ed-up,”
…
Navy was booed and peppered with “You suck!” chants when they stepped on the field for both halves. Toward the end of the second half, Rutgers students in the new bleacher section began to serenade the adjacent section of Navy fans and uniformed Midshipmen.
“F— you, Navy. F—you, Navy. F— you, Navy.”
Once the stadium expands Rutgers will begin to challenge West Virginia as the classiest fans in all of College Football. On the one hand, WVU is notorious for throwing batteries at visiting players, band members and fans, burning couches and dropping a deuce in a seat. The Rutgers’ equation of Many Asshole New Jerseyans + Liquor + Game Day Traffic + Competitive Football Team is certainly going to push the limit.

1VTBaZ on Sep 12, 2007 at 10:29 am:
People do realize that there is a self-imposed weight limit for Navy players right?
Seriously, shit like this is going on and Jim Weaver seriously thinks that “Stick it in” is the epitome in classlessness?
On a side note, keep on being Jersey-ians, Rutgers! With some hard work, you can turn into Morganhole north just yet!

News Flash: Students drink too much and say inappropriate things at a football game. Film at 11.
Seriously, is this such a big deal? Has anyone spent ANY time in the student section of an SEC or Big 12 game? Perhaps this is just backlash from last year’s fawning press and the Imus thing. From what I read, the crowd stood up when Navy walked on the field at the beginning of the game and the catcalls were isolated to a few rows. Maybe its a sign of Rutgers’ growing pains, now they need better Stadium security to kick the idiots out.

You are all forgetting that this is COLLEGE. These kids have every right to be rowdy and obnoxious. It’s not like the Rutgers Alumni are going and doing this, the students are. If you ever attended a college with a competitive sports team (or even a non-competitive sports team) you would realize that this happens all the time. It has been like this at Rutgers for years they are only now starting to get attention because they are a top 25 team.

I agree it is college football. Most students sections will be drunk and yell things. Morganhole takes it to the extreme by throwing batteries at heads and shitting in seats. At Tech games I hear people yelling fuck all the time. However, I am not sure it has ever gotten to the noise level where someone from associated with the school puts out a stay classy memo. Also it was against Navy, save the fuck chants for games that matter.

I am sure that the men and women at the Naval Academy and in the Navy in general are a heck of a lot tougher than the people who are “shocked” by this language think they are; at least they better be.

Dude, I went to JMU. At the time we were good (maybe) in a couple sports like swimming and archery. Didn’t stop us from going to random football/hoops/girls soccer/t-ball games and heckling the living sh1t outta the opposition. I used to think that that was what kids did in college, but now I’m wondering if it’s just because I’m from Jersey.
12Michael in Cleveland on Sep 12, 2007 at 2:30 pm:
Now nothing against the Navy people here, but you dont deserve special treatment because the government might turn you into a body bag in 2 years. You chose the school…in this game you were the visiting team and deserve nothing from the Home fans. Are you not tough enough to overcome the stupid chants from some drunk frat boys? Stop crying about this, because nothing is worse than military people and breaking down from some stupid words. (this article doesnt mention it, but another one I read where some Alumni and players were commenting on how its not nice or fair)…So…I commend Rutgers for apparently verbally getting to another team…its what fans are supposed to do. By the way… I always root for Navy Vs. Army.

“Traditional powerhouse?” “mainstay in the polls”???
They’ve had success for the past year and 2 games this year. Isn’t this getting a little ahead of things here? How about getting a bowl game that is actually shown on TV before becoming a “traditional powerhouse?”
And booing and chanting against people that are going to serve their country and face real danger and death is not classy and should not be tolerated anywhere. When my Alma Mater plays Army, I hope this doesn’t happen.

VTBaZ has just provided the most myopic and off-topic post in the thread. I HAVE been to games in both the SEC and Big 12. I HAVE heard similar taunting and, yes sparky, expletives directed at the visiting team. So you see I DO get it, it’s just not a big deal nor is it exclusive to one school.
And I am glad you’re grateful for attending a “southern school.” America needs as many people in the food service industry as possible.

Rutgers alum here…this story has been waaaaaaay overblown. Yes, this happened, but it wasn’t a majority of people or anything…it was a relatively small group in the student section. And as soon as it started getting loud, the other people in the student section and surrounding seats booed loud enough at the idiots doing the chants to stop.
Look, I’m not saying it was right…it was a totally classless thing to do. But it was such a small number of people that it’s really not representative of the entirely of the Rutgers fans. And the Director of Athletics and Vice President of Student Affairs have addressed that this behavior won’t be tolerated.
http://www.scarletknights.com/news/release.asp?prID=5648
One thing to bear in mind is that pretty much anywhere in college or pros, football/baseball/whatever, you can get a group of morons to get loud and be assholes.

Scott, way to drop the word “myopic”… been a while since you could do that huh, you bougoise ($10 word!) tool? Also, I would guarantee my degree is better than yours (and can be verified from people on this blog) so you can continue with that as well, if you would like. Any other off-topic tangents you want to bring up? Any other ways you want to try to sound big over the internet? Want to claim your penis is bigger than mine as well? This is the internet and you are anonymous so, remember: you can say any old thing you want and get off scott free! Pun intented.
Once again, I re-iterate, this shit does not happen in SEC or Big12 schools. If you’re talking rivalry games, thats a whole other issue but I am not as it is not the issue at hand. I am talking about rude, obnoxious fans getting riled up over whipping up on a non-conference sacrificial lamb of a game.
I’ve been to Knoxville, probably the “worst” SEC venue for a UT-ND game and didn’t see anything like that. I have plenty of friends at Auburn and Alabama and they were frankly offended when anything like that was brought up. I’m sure if Craig wanted to chime in to defend UF, he could. TechSideline is filled with people absolutely raving about the people at LSU over the weekend.
I was told by many people visiting Texas A&M that they are the nicest group of people to ever host us. Hell, from what I hear about that crowd, its considered improper to even drink before games. I have been told to expect to see the classiest group of cfb fans ever when I go to Lincoln next year for the matchup. ALSO, I remember quite a few Longhorns way back when being appauled at the way they were treated when they went to Columbus and were shocked when the Buckeye faithful claimed thats how they thought they were going to be treated in Austin.
Like JRL said, it was probably a minority of people, but even yet, try to clean it up. It only got really nasty in Blacksburg when WV”U” came to town, and thats hate begetting hate right there.

Ken: thank you for your input, so nice of you to talk big over the internet as well. I’m sure if we were face to face you wouldn’t be able to look me in the eye and speak so cavalierly. Don’t mistake civility for cowardice.
Which UT-ND game were you at? 2004 at Neyland stadium? I was and I was in the student section as well. All I heard was Rocky Top about 10000 times and “Catholics go home” chants followed by much intermingling and partying between the fanbases afterwards at Downtown bar and grill.
26Ken Dynamo on Sep 12, 2007 at 4:57 pm:

27Martin S. on Sep 12, 2007 at 5:44 pm:
I caught the ND-UT game in south bend in 2005. All the tennessee fans were great. We tailgated, chatted and the like with them before, during and after. And ND was killing them on the field, too. Sure, we have all heard a curse word at a game, but at ND I have never heard the students do a coordinated cheer involving curse words at all. All college kids at a game may be assholes, but stadiums DO differ greatly in class. No doubt about that.
28VTBaZ on Sep 12, 2007 at 6:42 pm:
Haha man you kill me “Ken Dynamo”. I’m done with you. For reference though, if you spoke like that to me in person you’d get bench pressed through a wall, kid. Woah be damned if you even thought about looking at cgb crosseyed… I’ve seen him absolutely demolish dudes for less.
What you guys don’t seem to understand is you can be intimidating and tough without throwing shit at people and generally being a prick. Come on Rutgers, when you were our homecoming W for about 5 years straight we didn’t treat you like assholes. Also, don’t think I’m advocating letting rivals walk all over you. Raise your hand if you have made Sports Illustrated for your behavior during a rivalry game… thats right, I don’t see anyone else. (See: Oct. 11, 2004 issue of Sports Illustrated).
At any rate, I forgot about Colorado… all of the Big12 just isn’t keepin it classy, contrary to what I said.

Baz, you make quality points about southern schools and the south in general. While I was in the Marines I was stationed in NC. The people I encountered in NC, SC, VA, and GA were the nicest, most hospitable people I have ever met. Ken Dynamo and Scott have only served to prove your point about ignorant and discourteous behavior. I was shown none in my stint below the Mason Dixon line, yet upon returning to NYC I was almost knifed for asking someone for directions.
Which brings me to Ken Dynamo, My Entire Team Sucks. You can call Baz whatever you want online, but trust me, as I have met him, standing toe to toe, you wouldnt even make eye contact with him. This is just another manifestation of the effect of ESPN on sports–its not just the players, and things have been changing for 15 years for the worse. To “act” like a college crowd these days, the more profane, idiotic, and self-absorbed the better–it gets a guy on TV after all. Cheering and supporting one’s own team aren’t enough. Who cares if it was Navy, Army, or Tulane–the guy is out there putting his health at risk representing his school and doing it basically for free (plus tuition). I’m sure lifting another beer or brat is the same level of commitment.
31Fresh2Death on Sep 12, 2007 at 10:25 pm:
VTBAZ, I’m going to have to agree with you on the difference between Rutgers and SEC schools. I went to to Tulane but I have been in multiple SEC environments for games. The whole atmosphere is completely different just to start. In Alabama, Saturday’s in the fall are huge, for those 3 hours when Alabama or Auburn is playing, depending on your allegiance, the whole state is dialed in like it’s the most important event in history. At the same time, as much as the students care about each game they have a level of respect for the history of the schools involved and game. The students at Rutgers and WVU have no excuse for their actions; nevertheless, they are only doing a disservice to themselves and the schools they represent. Roll Wave
32NismoMan on Sep 13, 2007 at 12:49 am:
I agree with VTBaz on all accounts. Hell, I envy crowds that can do cheers together, united behind their team. (I also think it’s BS that “Stick it in” is under fire) Rutgers fans are still young in the ways of big-time college ball, so they are apt to act like they do at pro events: like total ass-hats. (I kinda wish we could play a home and home series again, just to keep tabs on how things are progressing.) Back to the issue at hand, fans who resort to obscenities are undeserving of their seats. If you want to heckle, do it in good spirit. The thing I regret most about this whole situation (beyond the disrespect towards a great bunch of players) is that I get clumped in with those losers who aren’t creative enough to follow the cheers or think of something witty to say that isn’t R-rated. Shaking my head in Scarlet disgust,

35Shaun on Sep 13, 2007 at 8:51 am:
Though what Rutgers fans did is not the most classiest of actions, I can’t completely berate them. A lot of good points have been made but I will say this.. a lot of the schools that you are mentioning are well established, mega programs. The Tenn’s, the USC’s, the Georgia’s, Florida’s etc don’t have to talk shit to inferior teams because they’ve been there done that. They have bigger fish to fry and know which games are valuable and which are not in the larger scheme of things. When I was at Virginia Tech, most of us were gone by halftime and wouldn’t even be around to talk trash to the cupcake teams that we played.
However, when our basketball team suddenly got better, I heard fans saying nasty stuff to opponents that wasn’t even necessary. The reason? Because our basketball team hasn’t done jack in the past and every win we got was a celebration it seemed like. That being said, Rutgers football fans are like rookie college football fans when it comes to success. They haven’t had any real success before so they don’t know any better yet. I’m sure, when they get better and more established in the coming years, you won’t hear about this kind of stuff because they’ll save it for their big games.
Also, it takes those selected, classless drunk guys to get your stadium to a level that Lane Stadium is at. You don’t become an intimidating place to play at by clapping for inferior teams. And as much as I hate WVU because our rivalry, I’m not going to say their fans suck because they make Morgantown intimidating as hell. I know for a FACT, that there were a lot of tech kids who didn’t want to go there for one of our games a few years ago because of the fights and threat of getting jumped. So I gotta give Rutgers a pass on this one… If they’re still like this five years from now, I’ll be the first to call them out.
36EpicureanQuaker on Sep 13, 2007 at 9:39 am:
JaroslavHasek: You nailed it…its typical of the Southern mentality, to engage in passive-aggressive pleasantries (the ubiquitous ‘bless your heart’ comes to mind), only to rely upon threats when their obviously insincere ‘civility’ isn’t returned. Jesus wept, some loud-mouthed RU fans trash-talked a football team! So it somehow undermines the military by the extremely tangential act of shouting obscenities at a players on their team? Where have I heard that argument before…?
Also, VTBaZ? Time to take off the rose-colored hearing aid if you think prurient language isn’t the norm during SEC and Big 12 games. The rabid clan mentality of Southerners leaves me a bit dubious as to your claims. This selective hearing on your part dovetails nicely with the percentage of folks in that region who claim to be regular churchgoers, as opposed to the numbers who actually attend.
