The Steelers have settled on the franchises first team mascot. After careful consideration of more than 70,000 applicants Steely McBeam, submitted by Diane Roles, was chosen. The following questions quickly come to mind: how awful are the other 69,000 names, is Diane an actual Steelers fan or a Cowboys fan living in Pennsylvania and finally is this name any better than Pound me in the Ass Steel Neil?
VTBaz has suggested renaming the team Queerlers.

The Steelers already have a mascot. His name is Jack Lambert. This new one is just sad.

mmm, homophobia… guess I’ll go back to rooting for the redskins…

For fans of Cincinnati, this is a wonderful gift. Steely McNeil. Pffhaa!

I heard they were going to rename the stadium from Heinz to the Anvil

Is this all this stupid town has left to cling to? I’m so tired of hearing endless amounts of items on Steeler Nation! Why name a mascot after an industry that has screwed countless people out of their healthcare and benefits and pensons in the city as well as the state? It really pisses me off. Just something else stupid for people to waste their money on!
7Jim on Aug 9, 2007 at 2:53 pm:
Poor Amy! You must be a product of public liberal education! Never mind the fact that your precious UNIONS screwed the workers out of their pensions, healthcare and retirement……If you would like a REAL education in economics email me…I can help!
I think the mascot is okay as far as they go. What harm is it. It’ll bring no more influence to a victory or defeat as a half naked, clueless cheerleader….though I gusess they would be a little better on the eyes! Grow up, calm down, and most of all, HAVE FUN!

Stealy will never live up to the Kevin Koch, aka Captain Jolly Roger, aka The Sandman.

The northern demand for steel during the late 1890’s and through 1900’s pretty much began the pillaging of WV and western PA of resources. Speaking of WV there is another equally stupid mascot at WVU.
10amy on Aug 9, 2007 at 4:51 pm:
Whatever Jim. Enlighten me on an economics education. Or, sit on my middle finger and spin. Whatever is your preference. Sounds like you would like the latter since you are so anal.
My great-grandfather was my last connection to the steel industry so they aren’t MY unions. There were many factors involved with the industry hauling ass out of the region. Hauling my ass out of the region was the best decision I’ve ever made.
Instead of focusing on a mascot for the team, they should be focusing on new industries and economic development in addition to the rich cultural base that the city already has. That’s my point. If you aren’t a native of Pittsburgh, you don’t give a rats ass about the team.
11cgb on Aug 9, 2007 at 6:03 pm:
Damn Jimmy Amy jacked you up. However, Amy most of those people in that region are working class men. They would rather have winning football and beer than work for something that might not pay off until their grand children’s generation.
12amy on Aug 9, 2007 at 6:43 pm:
CGB- yes I understand that. It’s just disappointing and frustrating to me because I think the city has so much going on that gets brushed under the table. And if they focused their energies on promoting other assets that more would move into the area.
13Carl on Aug 9, 2007 at 9:29 pm:
This mascot doesn’t even compare to the most heterosexually challenged mascot, which happens to reside one state westward…Brutus Buckeye!!!
14cgb on Aug 9, 2007 at 9:51 pm:
Isn’t Brutus the only mascot in college football not be alive. He is a stupid buckeye. I guess every animal and plant was already taken.
15Jim on Aug 10, 2007 at 6:22 am:
Again, POOR AMY! Life is too short to be so pissy! I’m not trying to beat you up but trying to make you realize that the UNIONS did this to the area, not the industry. I grew up in Pittsburgh and all of my family still live there. I, like you, made the choice of a better future somewhere else MANY moons ago.
You are right about the city using it’s resources but CGB is right; “…They would rather have winning football and beer than work for something that might not pay off until their grand children’s generation.”
I love the city, it’s rightful pride, and most of all, it’s people. I am proud to say that I came from that area but realized at a young age it was not where I was going to realize my dreams.
CGB- Amy didn’t jack me up…..she’s just misguided and angry. Understanding the truth and reality will cure that anger in time. A potty mouth and bad attitude doesn’t “jack someone up”, but winning a real debate with facts will!

I’m from Pittsburgh, and I love the Steelers, but I do NOT think we needed a mascot in the first place. But if they were going to go ahead and do it, at least give him a manly name! Steely McBeam? So awful.
What’s next? Cheerleaders? They of course will have big poofy Pittsburgh hair and talk like truck drivers. Our women are one of a kind. haha
And by the way, I also go to Ohio State, and I think Brutus is awesome. He’s the coolest poisonous nut I’ve ever seen! Go Bucks! Go Steelers!
17cgb on Aug 10, 2007 at 11:34 am:
You will see how I feel about Ohio State once the season starts.
I would have to agree that Steelers cheerleaders would be nothing but awful. I would imagine their common denominator would be armpit hair.
18Kelly on Aug 10, 2007 at 12:34 pm:
hahaha you’re probably right. Now, I’m a Pittsburgh woman myself, but at least we Pittsburghers know how to make fun of ourselves. But I would like to comment that I shave my armpits.
19cgb on Aug 10, 2007 at 1:03 pm:
I am pretty sure we broke a record for comments on the blog. Awesome!
Yeah whenever I think of woman from Pitt I think of this: http://www.gallopaway.com/images/photos/Frances-cavewoman.jpg
20Suzanne on Aug 10, 2007 at 1:28 pm:
Ouch… I would like to state for the record that I am from Pittsburgh and I look nothing like that picture cgb!! I also know Kelly quite well, and she looks nothing like that picture. Neither of us have poofy hair, and we have no need to braid our armpits since they are clean shaven.. so are the legs in case you’re wondering!
21Kelly on Aug 10, 2007 at 1:45 pm:
hmm… no the hair is much poofier. That’s not really a good description of a Pittsburgh woman. Now I have to get defensive because I do love my city!
22cgb on Aug 10, 2007 at 1:56 pm:
I went to the Pitt Virginia Tech game a few years ago, 2003 I think. The had had a sweet shirt that said where was Ray Lewis when Joey Porter got shot. Alas, now he is playing for Miami and they are probably selling shirts that say shoot Joey’s Other Cheek.
