As I browsed the news this morning I noticed something particualry alarming about the ESPN College Football homepage. The following is a sampling of the headlines:
- Two Gators Suspended Following Reported Arrest -

Brandon James (tailback/kickoff returner) and Brandon Powell (a reserve guard on the basketball team) were arrested after purchasing marijuana from an undercover officer. Both players were suspended indefinitely from their respective teams. Also, neither player has been charged because it’s ok for athletes to commit crimes as long as they don’t kill anyone…unless it’s Ray Lewis…or OJ. They can kill whoever they want. - Montana CB Faces Murder Charges in California - University of Montana cornerback Jimmy Wilson is in custody, accused of fatally shooting Kevin Smoot at his home outside LA. Wilson is the 6th current or former University of Montana player to be arrested within the last year.
- Sooners Report Players Used Banned Substances - The University of Oklahoma supplied their football team with two nutritional substances that have been banned by the NCAA. Supposedly, this was done in error and once the mistake was identified it was reported to the NCAA by the school. After all the recruiting/booster problems Oklahoma has been having this is just adding fuel to the fire.
- Two Ex-Players at I-AA Albany Plead
Guilty to Rape - Lorenzo Ashbourne and Julius Harris raped a drunken coed in their dorm room. The both pled guilty to a felony count of rape and were sentenced to 6 months in prison, 10 years of probation, and will be required to register as sex offenders. I don’t know much about rape (you’ll have to trust me) but that seems like a relative slap on the wrist. Anyway, you guys are football players at a pretty small school…you can’t get girls to willingly let you double team them? Have fun scaring your neighbors for the rest of your life because you are on the touchers list. - Texas Safety Arrested In Burglary Plans to Transfer - Sophmore Robert Joseph was arrested after being caught sitting in a car that did not belong to him. My biggest question is how a division one college athlete was run down by a security guard. He needs to work on his off-season conditioning. Also, if your goal is to make it to the NFL, how about you just stay out of trouble for a few years, get drafted, and buy any damn car you want. Joseph is the second Texas player to be arrested this month after defensive end Henry Melton was charged with a DUI.
This has gotta scare the living Christ out of Roger Goodell because these players are the future of the NFL and we all know he doesn’t need another Chris Henry/Pacman Jones/Michael Vick/Tank Johnson/etc. on his hands. Athletes acting up in college is nothing new but if more than half of the headlines relevant to college football on any given day involve arrests, you might have an issue. Didn’t schools used to consider character when making scholorship decisions. I think they did. I blame the 1990s Miami program for this downfall. Why, you ask? Beacuase i can.

well at least one coach seems to be making an effort to clean up his teams behavior. Joepa may be old but he can still lay down the law. After an alleged fight on the mean streets of state college, pa involving several of his athletes, Joepa doesn’t wait for any judge to make a decision. He decrees that his ENTIRE team will clean the 107K+ seat stadium after every home game this year. way to be insanely awesome joepa. I’d like to see bobby bowden try to get some of his fine young men to clean up after one of their home games, bowden would be shanked to death before he finished his sentence.

Paterno is pretty sweet like that. I saw that shit and was like damn that is awesome. Still my fondest memory of Paterno is back 4-5 years ago when after getting a bunch of shit calls a couple of weeks in a row he hung a referee doll by a noose from his door knob.

Marcus Vick, brandon X2, the entire oklahoma team, and Joseph all have or had the NFL superstar syndrome. I can do what I want because I’m a superstar. But wait, they’re not NFL superstars, just wannabe’s. At least wait until you get the fat paycheck to afford the lawyer!
